Thomas Struth

German photographer Thomas Struth developed his individual, detached style during his studies at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf. What sets his photos apart from the work of many of his contemporaries is their bleached, analytical style. His images of cities, including Tokyo's Shinjuku, do not invite gasps of admiration at the beauty of the buildings pictured, but question how the whole lot fits together. Similarly, through his series of shots of well-known works of art, he seems to be mourning their loss of power, rather than their undoubted greatness. Unsettling and worthwhile.

Fashion isn't just for New York as LACMA celebrates the past 100 years of the designer clothing industry with a huge exhibition. With more than 130 costumes from the Museum's permanent collection, 'A Century of Fashion' will rotate in four parts. Featuring such designers as Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Valentino and Emilio Pucci, the exhibition examines how dress as a reflection of our society and illustrate how it has shaped our idea of femininity.

Glimmer, Glimmer and Shine

John Spencer ('The Rock', 'War Games', 'The West Wing') stars in Warren Leight's newest tragicomic play. Leight won a Tony Award for his play 'Side Man' and returns to the world of jazz with this story of twin brothers torn apart by music and hard living. When they form Eddie Shine's trumpet section in the big band days of the 1950s, one leaves the group at his wife's insistence and a 40-year feud begins. Evan Yionoulis directs this West Coast première before it goes to New York.

Ghirardellis

Ghirardellis spills out into Sandton Square offering a relaxed al fresco eating experience ideal for Johannesburg's balmy summer weather. The extensive Italian menu caters for a variety of tastes and portions are generous, tasty and reasonably priced. Chicken breasts are excellent, as are the enormous steaks. Both are served with a variety of tasty sauces - try the wicked chilli or garlic. For a truly decadent dessert, there's nothing to beat the chocolate mousse cake. No need to book if you're eating out early, but later diners will probably find the place packed on weekends.

Christmas Market

The annual market in campo san Stefano comes to life in early December and runs through until Boxing Day (December 26). A lifesaver for those with presents to buy, the market sells a wide range of handmade crafts from Venice's workshops. There is a nightly concert programme and entertainment. This year sees a 'Best Crib' competition for local schools. Beware, however, the mulled wine can have dangerous consequences...

Romeo and Juliet

The famed Sir Peter Hall returns to the Ahmanson, after last season's critically acclaimed 'Amadeus', to direct the ultimate love story. The play, based on Arthur Brooke's 'The Tragicall History of Romeus and Juliet', is one of Shakespeare's most popular and enduring plays. After the phenomenal success of Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation starring Leonardo Di Caprio, it will be interesting to see how theatre luvvie Hall manages to keep the audience entertained.
